MotoQ’s in Urban Games

Using the MotoQ

The MotoQ was used with great success today at the first of three weekends of large-scale urban games held by TechBirmingham and its partners. See this site for a complete recap of the first of two matches held today.

As noted in earlier posts, this gaming program was made possible this year through a generous grant from Verizon Foundation to Catalyst, a Birmingham-based civic non-profit focused on bringing positive change to the Birmingham, Alabama community.

Last year, the game used the Sidekick II device from T-Mobile. That device limited the game because it worked through a proxy for web pages and kept logging the game participants out. The MotoQ (especially with the region’s recently activated EVDO network) was flawless in the game and did not have the same inherent problems as the Sidekick.

Battery life was only a moderate issue of the first 2.5 hour round, even though this game uses web browsing and cameraphone capabilities constantly (we had a powered-up extended battery at the ready just in case). Emails used the phone’s MMS capability since the browser doesn’t support an upload HTML form.

If you’re in New York City next Saturday at noon, please bring YOUR Motorola Q to our event at CONFLUX Festival 2006 and play the game too!
